A mod created to make StarCraft 2 play more like World of WarCraft, with a third-person view and multiplayer raids, has turned to Kickstarter for funding.
StarCraft Universe, a mod that turns the popular RTS into an MMO, has been in development for two years, but the group behind the conversion hopes to bring the mod to open beta. Upheaval Arts hopes to get $80,000 to take the free mod public with an alternate storyline to the game.
After playing through Blizzard's part 2 of StarCraft 2 in Heart of the Swarm, the alternate reality--as seen in the video below--seems quite enticing, perhaps even moreso than Blizzard's official story. The alternate reality assumes that, in Wings of Liberty, the Queen of Blades dies, leaving the hybrids free to overwhelm the Protoss. The resulting narrative follows life of survivors after the destruction.
It already boasts the Terran and Protoss races and classes, but a proposed stretch goal would add the Zerg. Other possibilities--if extra money is raised--include female character models, a MOBA-style PvP area, localization in six languages and even the possibility of building out all the notable planets in the Koprulu sector if the campaign reaches $1 million.
If the goal is reached, the mod will be playable over Battle.net and will require StarCraft 2 to play, since it is not a standalone game. The team is staying in touch with Blizzard about bugs and technical requests. Apparently, Blizzard has no problems with the potential lore issues, as "they have given their blessing/permission for us to launch this Kickstarter, and they are supporting our efforts by featuring SCU as an Arcade Highlight," the team said on the Kickstarter page.
