Star Wars The Old Republic PvP Arenas

PvP in Star Wars: The Old Republic will no longer be just about capture point and resources. Soon it will be about team annihilation!

The BioWare team is hard at work on the upcoming 2.4 update for Star Wars: The Old Republic, and developer Alex Modny took to the official blog to give fans an update on a new addition to the game, the Warzone Arenas.

Modny, an assistant designer for the PvP and Combat team, said the Arenas will be 4v4 combat in a best-2-out-of-3 format to determine the winner. The new arenas are being tied to the Hutts, since the slimy worms seem to like games of all sorts that they can gamble on. Giradda the Hutt and Baron Deathmark will be the new NPCs in charge of the Arenas.

Three different arenas are currently in testing, with one each on Corellia, Tatooine, and an Orbital Station. Modny said the various aspects of the arenas have been in testing "for months" in an effort to balance them and get them just right for release.

An interesting twist is the introduction of a poison gas after a certain amount of time to "encourage" players to fight, and not just stealth around until the timer runs out. The cloud will pop players out of stealth and put them in combat, as well as providing a damage-over-time effect that can only be removed by getting out of the gas.

Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ is the only massively-multiplayer online game with a Free-to-Play option that puts you at the center of your own story-driven Star Wars saga. Play as a Jedi, a Sith, a Bounty Hunter or as one of many other Star Wars iconic roles and explore an age over three-thousand years before the classic films. Become the hero of your own Star Wars adventure as you choose your path down the Light or Dark side of the Force.

Players can queue as solo or group for ranked matches. In solo matches, players will be put in teams of similar composition. In group matches, teams can have whatever makeup they want. Rewards and experience will be the same as in other Warzones.

Some bad news for fans of the larger scale Warzones: 8v8 ranked areas are being eliminated. "The truth is that because of many factors not enough people played them and we didn't support them well enough, so they are going away for now," Modny said. "Getting eight friends together and hoping another eight people are doing the same at the exact same time AND your two teams were equally matched was a nightmare for the players."

Players can expect the new Arenas to hit the public test servers on August 16. Modny said that after update 2.4, at least one more Arena map will follow, and that F2P players will be able to eventually be able to take part in Warzones. He said more on that will come later.

I always hated PvP Arenas because I was terrible at it, but there is no denying the popularity of it, especially is such games as World of Warcraft. It should be a great addition to the game.
