Here's What Will Become of World of Warcraft's Vale of Eternal Blossoms

Hint: it's kind of depressing.

While World of Warcraft today revealed the Timeless Isle zone that's coming as part of patch 5.4, the island is almost unnervingly peaceful compared to what's going on in the rest of the Azeroth. For instance, the once beautiful Vale of Eternal Blossoms will soon see great destruction as a focal point of the plot.

Warchief Garrosh Hellscream ordered a goblin dig team to scour the zone for an artifact buried in the Vale. Instead, they found a power that had long been thought locked away and untouchable. Naturally, the opening of this Pandaren Pandora's Box sets the scene for what happens in patch 5.4.

Enter the world of Azeroth and battle against the Alliance of humans, dwarves and night elves or the brutish orcs, trolls and undead of the Horde. World of Warcraft has a very large community of players with hundreds of servers and a myriad of endgame pursuits from raiding dungeons, questing, achievement hunting, PVP arenas, and now pet battles.

Though we'll no doubt learn the specifics through questing and events, the Blizzard blog reveals that treasures like the Whitepetal Lake will soon dry up, meaning that local fish like the Jewel Danio will no longer be present (fear not; they're getting relocated to the much more peaceful Timeless Isle). Though the process for entering the Vale will remain largely the same, the quests leading there will be updated to reflect the new changes. Depressingly, players will no longer be whisked into a breathtaking vista; instead, we'll get to bear witness to the dying landscape that the neverending war between the Alliance and Horde has left in its wake.

Daily quests will still be available at the Setting Sun Garrison, though there will be fewer of them now as the war rages on. Though WoW is truly a master of destroying its own beautifully detailed world (remember the Cataclysm expansion?), the loss of the Vale is still quite saddening to this longtime WoW player. Let's hope 5.4's storyline is absorbing enough to balance out the tragedy. In the meantime, players are advised to keep checking back on the WoW blog for the imminent reveal of the Siege of Orgrimmar trailer.
