Hyperbole alert! ArenaNet reveals 3 million units sold in first nine months since release.
You see it in marketing all the time. Spin a few numbers for some great headlines. Now it is ArenaNet's turn, as it has announced that Guild Wars 2 is the 'fastest-selling MMO' in history, having sold more than 3 million units in Europe and North America in the first nine months since it launched on August 28 of last year.
But let's not take ArenaNet's word for it. Here is analyst David Cole of DFC Intelligence to confirm: "After triangulating against multiple data sources, it's clear that Guild Wars 2 is the fastest-selling Western MMO of all time based on the first nine months of availability. This puts Guild Wars 2 in an impressive position when they release in China, where we've seen similar franchises really take off."
Of course, that exact same 3 million number was mentioned by game director Colin Johanson back in January, although there was no breakdown of boxed vs. digital sales. By May, publisher NCsoft was reporting Q2 package sales for Guild Wars 2 in Europe and North America had dropped.
Snarkiness aside, those are some nice numbers. There is no denying that Guild Wars 2 is pretty popular, and that popularity should increase when the game hits China, courtesy of publishing partner KongZhong. But we'll take the numbers and hyperbole with a grain of salt until we see NCsoft's next quarterly report due some time next month.
In the interim, ArenaNet is giving potential players a chance to try the game for free for three days beginning on August 23. If interested, you can sign up on the official site.
