Camelot Unchained's feline Cait Sith bear a strong resemblance to Celtic mythology, not the Final Fantasy VII character.
"Cait Sith" is usually remembered among gamers as the talking robot cat from Final Fantasy VII, but he name itself is much older. It dates all the way back to Celtic legends, referring to a magical feline race known for transformation and stealing human souls. The myth would be a perfect fit for any number of fantasy games, the latest of which is Camelot Unchained. City State Entertainment recently announced that the Cait Sith will be featured in its Kickstarter-funded MMO, albeit altered somewhat to suit the Arthurian-era apocalypse.
City State has yet to reveal screenshots or concept art for the Cait Sith, but has outlined some overall goals for the species. First and foremost, the developer isn't interested in producing another anthropomorphic cat race; Camelot Unchained's Cait Sith will be far more feline than human. These creatures will also be the Realm's foremost predators, strong and mean enough to sit on top of the food chain. City State intends to tie its Cait Sith to Arthurian legend, as it will for other mythological races. Finally, there's a possibility that Cait Sith will be shapeshifters, presumably turning from human to cat at will, a detail also matching the classic stories.
To help introduce the Cait Sith, City State posted some short fiction describing the mysterious race's origins and how they first became affiliated with King Arthur's quest. So far, it's an intriguing premise, but considering that Camelot Unchained is still in progress, we have until 2015 to find out how well they fit in.
