Whoever Square Enix contracted for FF14's servers is probably experiencing a whole lot of screaming at the moment.

If you've been anticipating the early access period of Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn's re-release, you have been experiencing a series of unfortunate events as Square Enix and their datacenters struggle to correct a few problems. Starting early on the 24th of August, 2013, links to the instancing server started to get rejected. What this meant was that no instanced events (storyline quests, battlefields, or dungeons) could be started. While Square immediately took steps to correct the issue, things were made worse when the dreaded "Error 90000" issue once again began to plague players. Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn officially releases on Tuesday, August 27th.

Sadly, if you were wandering around Eozera while these errors were occurring, you saw some of the best and worst that humanity has to offer. While you also saw players bonding by grouping up to grind on content they could access, other players took to racist and hate-filled rhetoric. Some went for making fun of the Japanese servers wondering if this issue was already fixed in Japan since this game comes from there. Perhaps having just watched Vanilla Sky, a few players screamed at the game's sky and demanded their money back. Others took to demanding new atomic bombs be dropped for this serious trangression of datacenters overloading machines.

By most accounts, this strife looks and is acting like automated defense procedures taken during a DDOS attack. As players stressed the instance server, it seems to have shut off access at some point. This was further evidenced by multiple players being able to access the instance server because they were the first players on the server and later players being denied access. In addition to these problems, moving between zones eventually became a problem in much the same way. Too many players moving between areas seems to have triggered a defensive shut down.

In the end, this is speculation and we may end up never knowing what happened. If they do release those details, we will report them here.
