Star Wars: The Old Republic Readies Galactic Starfighter Expansion

| 8 Oct 2013 22:44

BioWare's latest Old Republic expansion offers custom starfighters, new battle arenas, and PvP space combat.

The Star Wars franchise has a great many elements that translate well to videogames, from battles with Stormtrooper armies to epic lightsaber duels. Perhaps the most iconic element from the series are its intense starfighter combat sequences, which will be the focus of Star Wars: The Old Republic's latest expansion. Following up on Rise of the Hutts, BioWare's Galactic Starfighter expansion will upgrade TOR's dogfighting mechanics, offering custom starfighters, new gameplay modes, and most importantly, 12-on-12 PvP space battles.

"Our goal with Star Wars: The Old Republic has always been to immerse players into their own Star Wars adventure and huge space battles are a vital part of fulfilling that fantasy," said BioWare Austin General Manager Jeff Hickman. "Galactic Starfighter will be a deep experience that will continue to grow over time. We can't wait for both our current and new players to get their hands on it soon."

Galactic Starfighter's major highlight will be its new space battles, which can be fought alongside friends and companions alike. Along with its unrevealed battle zones and gameplay modes, the expansion also allows players to customize unique ships while unlocking additional weapons, powers, and abilities. BioWare also promises that additional XP will be awarded to ground game characters for complete space missions, suggesting that Galactic Starfighter may offer starship-exclusive XP upgrades.

Galactic Starfighter officially launches on February 4, 2014, but subscribers will be able to unlock early access much sooner. Subscriber access begins on December 3rd, along with exclusive paint jobs and pilot suits, as well as a Gunship for subscribers as of November 1. Preferred Status members will get their own early access in January. Of course, it should go without saying that new players, free-to-play or otherwise, will need to create an Old Republic account to access the content in the first place.
