Mythic has announced that Warhammer Online will be free-to-play until it closes down on December 18th.
Back in September, it was sadly confirmed that Warhammer Online would be shuttering its doors this December. With time ticking down to virtual doomsday however, the game's developers at Mythic have decided to bestow a final kindness on its loyal users. Until it shuts down on December 18th, Warhammer Online will be 100 percent free-to-play.
Set in the Warhammer universe, Warhammer Online puts players in the middle of the war between the armies of Order and Destruction. With six races to choose from and multiple class options for each race, there are multiple ways for players to engage in quests to aid their faction, unlock lore and further immerse themselves in the dark, violent world of Warhammer.
"To give Warhammer Online a proper sendoff we are opening the game to anyone free of charge that has or had an account in good standing starting October 31st, 2013," said the Warhammer team in an announcement on Friday. The developers will also be adding in some extra content to help live up the game's final weeks of existence. "We will be adding new NPC's to the game in order to power up your characters as well as other unique experiences for everyone to enjoy as we say goodbye to Warhammer Online over the next few weeks."
While the game's fans probably appreciate more than a month of free play as well as the content additions and events being planned, we suspect it will be little solace to its most diehard devotees. One has wonder, as well, if the game's fortunes might have been different had the developers opted to go the free-to-play route a bit earlier in its life.
