Only bits and pieces are known about the upcoming movie focusing on the Warcraft universe. BlizzCon added a few more pieces.

The Warcraft movie has been shrouded in secrecy since it was announced years ago, with only tidbits coming to light every so often. Now that avowed World of Warcraft player Duncan Jones is at the helm of the project, we got a few more details from his panel at BlizzCon.

The movie will be a first contact, origin story from the time of the RTS games when Anduin Lothar was head of the Alliance and Durotan was head of the Frostwolf Orcs. The movie will focus on both factions, not favoring one over the other, with Jones saying "It will be both red and blue."

Blizzard's Chris Metzen, who is consulting on the film, said that both characters were chosen from the Warcraft lore because they both "represent the highest ideals of their races." A dual story line makes sense, he said, because the original RTS games did the same thing. But Jones admitted the storytelling will be a bit unusual and "break a few barriers. I don't think you're going to see a lot of films with this structure," he said.

The movie will be a combination of live action and CGI, and human actors will portray orcs, although Jones joked that "it has been hard to find an actor that looks like Durotan."

The movie will also be a war story, and despite a targeted PG-13 rating, Jones said he envisions it as a Gladiator-style depiction of war. "It will be down and dirty and covered in grime," he said.

In response to some fan questions, Jones:

  • said the film has a linguist on staff that will be working on the Orcish language to flesh it out more.
  • stopped short of saying if there would be any prominent female characters in the film, such as Jaina Proudmoore or Garona, but he hinted that fans wouldn't be disappointed. "There are plenty of opportunities for female lead roles from that era, he said.
  • indicated the music for the film would recreate the grand and epic nature from the games, but he did not say who would be doing the film's score.
  • said that the film will include familiar locales from the Eastern Kingdoms. Concept art was shown of Stormwind, Ironforge and Dalaran. Art was also shown of Draenor, the Orc homeworld before it was shattered into the Outlands.

The film is expected to begin shooting early next year, and be ready for theaters in December 2015.
