PlanetSide 2 has received a new optimization patch that will reportedly improve some players' frame rate by as much as 30 percent.
Back in September Sony Online Entertainment revealed that it was preparing a large scale optimization effort aimed at improving PlanetSide 2's frame rate and performance. "We think the core game is THERE," said tech director Ryan Elam, at the time. Now, the development team's efforts, dubbed Operation: Make Faster Game has born some tangible fruit in the form of a "Phase 1" patch now live on the game's servers.
Fight for your Empire, in this space opera combat game. Join the Terrans, the Vanu or the New Conglomerate, and help bring your faction glory and fame!
From the developer: "Battles take place not between dozens of troops, but thousands; with air and ground vehicles slugging it out alongside squads of troops. Whether in open fields, tightly packed urban centers or enormous structures, planning, teamwork and communication are essential."
The game is free to play, but you have the option of buying extras - cosmetic and convenience stuff - in game.
This is only available on PC for the moment, but there's been talk of a Mac port.
According to SOE the first wave of changes will include an optimized UI, physics, sound, rendering code and player processing and more. The resulting improvements are expected to improve the game's performance and frame by upwards of 30 percent." We focused our efforts on the machines that more than 80% of our player base had, which is quad-core or above, AMD and Intel, 4G or more RAM, Windows 64-bit, AMD and NVIDIA GPUs," said Elam. "We focused almost entirely on CPU optimizations, because it's a great deal easier to lower GPU settings when you want higher FPS."
Alongside the patch's release, SOE will also be awarding 10,000 players who helped test the game on a Public Test Server a three day experience boost. Gamers can expect the current round of updates to be followed up by even more changes both in the short and long term. "Over the next few weeks, we will likely release a hotfix build or two," said Elam. "We will also be giving you more information about our long-term plans and where our efforts will be focused going forwards."
