Sam remembered his childhood. Mother? Everyone had the same mother. Her name was U. She was a female reproductive system that was kept in the science center. Uland's citizens were a family. Sexual organs were removed in infancy, but surgery enabled normal bladder and bowel functionality.
[P]As one of the Humos family, Sam remembered that, as a child, he had been fed and cared for by the 'Carers' at the science center. Everyday he would have electrodes fitted to his head, and he would listen to music. It had a high frequency that hurt his head, but he got used to it and, after a while, the pain went away.
