Brad McQuaid recently sat in on RPG Vaults Online Worlds Roundtable #10, Part 2

Whenever a new genre is introduced or reintroduced successfully, it attracts all sorts of people - gamers, developers, publishers, investors, etc. I remember when single-player RPGs were allegedly dead. Suddenly, some good ones came out, everyone said 'wow!' and people jumped on the bandwagon. We got more good RPGs, and some uninspired ones. Why? Because the element for whom making great games is a mystery just throw a bunch of crap against the wall and see what sticks. Then the same thing happened with RTS games, and now with online worlds.
