When I logged into SWG today my frame rate was a whopping 1fps. I was confused until I remembered that I'd recently installed the new nVidia drivers, version 56.64. I browsed on over to the nVidia site and started reading up on the new drivers.
The first thing that caught my eye was that nVidia has included "profiles" which allow you to set different hardware settings up for individual games. They actually have quite a few game profiles pre-configured. I looked for SWG in the list and didn't find it and wondered what might happen if I set up a profile.
Most, if not all, of the existing profiles are identical. Everything but Image Settings is set to Application-Controlled, and the Image Settings are set to Quality. I went ahead and set up the profile for SWG and tried the game again. Problem solved.
Here's the step-by-step.
- First right-click on your Windows desktop and select Properties.
- Click on Settings.
- Click on the Advanced button in the lower right corner.
- Click on GeForce Whatever card you have here tab. This will produce a menu that will pop out to the side of the control.
- Select [i]Performance & Quality from the pop out menu tree.
- Now you'll see a window that has a section called Application Profiles at the top. - Global Driver Settings should be showing in that field. If not, click on the drop down arrow on the control and select - Global Driver Settings.
- Now click on the Add... button.
- Type in a name in the top box, I suggest Star Wars Galaxies, then use the browse button and browse to your C:Program FilesStar Wars Galaxies directory and select the SWGClient_r.exe file.
[li]Click Ok. You're all done!
That's all you need to do.
Additional Information
I've continued to have some problems with the new driver. I've found if any of the boxes in the profile are checked the frame rate goes back down to 1fps. Even with no boxes checked, I find that my cursor in SWG is messed up. It doesn't seem to refresh properly.
I've also added a discussion thread here for any comments any of you might have about your experience with the driver.
I also sent a note to nVidia which, surprisingly, they responded to, so hopefully there will be some information about the problem coming from them soon.

Well, I couldn't ever get the game stable with the new driver, even with the profile, so I finally gave up and went back to the old driver. Sorry, I really thought I had a solution figured out.
Oh well.
