Our good friends over at MMORPG.COM have a very thorough article detailing Richard Duffek's trip to the SoE VIP Fansite event in San Diego last weekend. Parts One, Two and Three out of Five are now up for viewing and are more than worth the read. There is a plethora of information covered by these articles and we look forward to seeing the last two parts! Here is a sample below:
Part 1 - El Mariachi, Lobsters and Gamer's Heaven
Exactly at what point of the evolution process, brain wise, between all of you guys did you decide on making it to where things are based on Archetypes with flavor as opposed to the actual interdependency within the specific classes?
It was actually a pretty early decision in the design of the game. One of the main goals was to, like we said earlier, when the player is building a group or party, you want these basic iconic representations of your adventurers. And the specific flavor beyond that is good in certain areas, but is not totally necessary.
Part 2 - Magic and Spells
How much actual change can an Artisan bring to a particular spell?
Significant amounts. As you adventure and harvest components from the world, there are differing availabilities and advancement of components. It's very easy to find things like Tin or Roots or whatever, but there are also more advanced materials like Bronze. And at each level range the same thing occurs, those more advanced materials make better and more powerful versions of the spells and items.
Part 3 - Tradeskills
What about a Crafter's Mark of sorts? Is there a way to identify the crafter of the item?
Yes, on all of the finished products it will have identification. So not on the pieces like the Tin Bars or Pommels or parts like that, but in the final end product it will say "Made by <Crafter's Name>" or something along those lines.
