Our friend Steve "Moorgard" Danuser posted some information in clarification relating to Artisans on the official forums. This is what he had to say:
Another thing to keep in mind is that most artisans won't be running through a myriad of zones to practice their craft. Take your apartment in a typical city district or village, for instance. Right inside the inn with the door to your room is a banker. In every district and village is the entrance to a public workshop zone that contains rooms full of crafting devices. Basically everything the average artisan will need can be found very close to home.
We like the idea of workshop zones because we're designing artisans to be interdependent upon one another. Especially at the subclass level, crafters are going to need components made by other crafters in order to create many of their finished goods. Workshop zones add yet another social element to the life of the artisan.
What I'm trying to get at is that the decision against offline vending doesn't exist as a solitary element of gameplay. There are many aspects of crafting and the economy that touch upon that one facet, and we really want to see the whole process in action before we evaluate whether one particular part of the equation is achieving the goals we are aiming for.
