When asked by this Freeworld reporter how he got started in making games, Dave Midien said he had to show some skin...actually, his exact words were, "Well, Arwen, I was talking to Draconus [Clyde Bielss, CEO of MindSurge, head dev for Freeworld] and showed him some of the skins I had made. He asked me to be on the team."

Naturally, I had to clarify the term skins, so I asked Dave what exactly he did in Freeworld. He said he pretty much worked in making textures for armor, weapons, monsters, etc. "Same as Draconus," he said.

Trying to pin this guy down was a little bit of hard work, so I came right out with it. "What are skins?" I said. He grinned. "Skins are the textures made for NPCs (non-player characters), players, armor."

He went on to explain how the textures are created. "I get a blank model sent to me, basically a mesh, which is just a wire frame of the model, flattened out to be painted on. Then I have to figure out which parts are the head, etc., and make it into a skin. Then I skin it, test it. Using a brush, I make actual armor models and faces etc. Then I resize them to fit the skins and paint on them and send it to Drac to be loaded into the game.

It sounded fascinating. I asked him how long he'd been doing this.

He couldn't tell me precisely...a long time anyhow. "I skinned other games before Freeworld just for fun and to show off my skins," he said. "I've never worked for a game company before. I just skin for the fun of it...something to do when I'm bored. As you know, Freeworld is all voluntary, so I do it when I have time."

I thanked him for the interview and trotted off, marveling about the wonderful world of skin. It wasn't as painful as I had thought.
