In response to a thread with the question, What is IPVP? Steve "Moorgard" Danuser responds with his explanation:
We first used the term IPvP quite some time ago, and it's really no longer very indicative of the way our guild system works. Guilds are only as competitive as members feel they need to be. If you are happy with the level of your guild and the rewards offered to you, play the game that way. If you want your guild to be the highest level and have access to all the best rewards, you'll put in the extra time and dedication to making that happen. That's also how the game works for individuals, when you think about it.
There really isn't competition between guilds, except in the sense that there is competition between all players to attain the highest level and have the best gear. Just like in EQ, some people will prefer playing lower-level characters forever. Likewise, you can stay in a lower-level guild and be perfectly happy.
Our system is about giving you options. Want to play casually and put minimal effort into advancing your guild? You can do that. Want to run a guild with mixed membership between cities? Go right ahead. Want to powergame it and make a guild that's as efficient as possible? You can do that too. But as with anything in the game, you have to make choices.
Really the only guilds that might have a more difficult time are those who want to be mixed city but don't have enough members to keep a full list of patrons in the city they're registered--and that's assuming they care about hardcore advancement and getting the best rewards. Those who want to stay smaller, have enough members to maintain the maximum number of patrons, or who simply don't care that much about guild level can all play quite happily.
The guild status system is about earning the things you want your guild to have. There is no competition between guilds unless you want there to be. Each guild is free to go after the rewards it wants to, just as individual players are. Every playstyle is a matter of choices, and guilds are no exception.
