World Of Warcraft: Post-Launch WoW; Massive Sales

| 25 Nov 2004 05:54

There are several points of note regarding World of Warcraft, now that the game has been released.

  • Servers are currently very busy, and there are in some cases long waits to get onto a server--don't worry, this should be temporary as most players are currently focused in a limited number of areas. Blizzard is creating dozens and dozens of new servers to help, as well as working to increase their server performance.
  • You may notice server outages or immense lag now--this is directly related to the first point. WoW is very busy at the moment, and Blizzard is working hard to help eliminate the problems.
  • Gamecards will ship on Monday, November 29th. If you have been unable to find a card, that's why. For now, players without creditcard access will have to wait.

Also, WoW has been selling incredibly well. Blizzard has reported some numbers on their community site:

In just one day, World of Warcraft sold through an estimated 250,000 copies to players. Over 200,000 accounts have already been created, and peak concurrency across all active game servers has been above 100,000.

Retailers are reporting huge, record-breaking sales as well:

"World of Warcraft has once again shown that Blizzard consistently delivers the best games in the industry," said Robert McKenzie, vice president of merchandising at GameStop. "It sold better than any other PC game this year - in fact, World of Warcraft enjoyed the best day-one sell-through GameStop has ever seen on a PC title!"

For now we'll all have to deal with these inconveniences as Blizzard works to fix some of the issues. In the meanwhile, have a happy Thanksgiving!
