Asherons Call: New Singularity Summary

| 27 Feb 2003 16:21

Dereth is a chaotic place, with wide and varied types of creatures populating it, along with the vast amounts of magical energy flowing across the landscape.  These factors, combined with the unprecedented level of autonomy given to the Directors while on Dereth, lead to the appearance of an "aberration" among many of their ranks:  Individuality.  This would lead to a war that would threaten to tear the Singularity in two...[/p]

Prologue:

PY -40

  • The Virindi first arrive on Dereth.  Their mission here is unknown.

~PY -35

  • Virindi are somehow driven off, likely by Asheron.

~PY -15

  • The Virindi return to Dereth.

~PY -3:

  • Hea Tumeroks are altered by Virindi in order to better serve them.

Solclaim, PY 11 ("Heroes Respite")

  • "Claude" is sent by the Directive to observe humans.  He takes up residence in the archmage shop in the new town of Ayan Baqur.

Frostfell, PY 11 ("The Child of Daralet")

  • Sir Alayne trades Candeth Martine to the Virindi in exchange for help against Bael'Zharon.
  • Levistras is present at the meeting between the Virindi, the Dericost, Isin Dule's renegade Shadows, and Asheron to determine a means to combat BZ.  Asheron indirectly inspires the Director.  Seeing the Quiddity as to rigid and unable to adapt, it sets out to create a new, free-thinking Directive on Auberean.
  • Humans steal a fragment of the Singularity manifested on Dereth, quickening the "corruption" of Levistras and his fellow Directors.
  • Many Directors take names and titles, unheard of among their kind.  They begin making plans to establish their New Singularity.  Some set out to study humans as a means to separate themselves from the Quiddity, while others begin to stockpile the resources needed to establish their own core Quiddity on Auberean.

The New Singularity:

Coldeve, PY 12 ("Lonely in the World")

  • The beginning of the Virindi's movements on Dereth is heralded by the appearance of a purple hue throughout the sky.
  • The Virindi's Tumerok allies begin to move, establishing fortresses in the deserts.
  • Martine's alterations and "training" are complete.  He avenges himself upon the Mosswart tribe that captured and turned him over to the Virindi.  Afterwards he returns to his masters and quickly usurps their power, turning most of the cell into his servants.  His "Overseer", however, manages to escape.

Wintersebb, PY 12 ("Spring's Sorrows")

  • New Virindi-related creatures appear, including Dolls, Marionettes, and magic-casting Monougas.  A new type of more "combat-oriented" Virindi, the Executor, also appears.
  • An Observer portals into Ayan Baqur, warning that only he is keeping the renegade Virindi at bay.  Despite this, he is quickly dispatched.
  • Renegade Virindi then take the place of every citizen of the town.  Normal functions (trade, crafting, gossip, etc.) continue, however.
  • By gleaning information from the Virindi "Ulgrim", adventurers are able to track down Ayan Baqur founder Jaleh al-Thani and crafter Yuan Hanzu, who escaped their captors.  They note that the remaining prisoners were taken to a nearby dungeon called the Panopticon.
  • Inside the Panopticon, the Ayan Baqur citizens are found, showing mental effects of Virindi experimentation.  These experiments are meant to further the renegades' goal of breaking away from the hivemind of the Quiddity.
  • The Virindi in command of the facility, Adirred the Theoretician, is defeated, but the citizens remain imprisoned.

Morningthaw, PY 12 ("A Reign of Stone")

  • An alliance is formed between the renegade Virindi and the Gotrok, a rebel faction of Lugians.  In exchange for the Lugians mining the anti-magic mineral chorizite for the Virindi to use, they provide the Lugians with hollow weapons and armor, along with other support.  A consulate is constructed near Tukal to better accommodate this alliance.
  • Adventurers breeched the consulate and slew Cazamel the Envoy, who negotiated the alliance between his faction and the Gotrok under orders from a Virindi called "the Speaker for the New Directive".  Message shards found on the Envoy and his Legates pointed to a laboratory in the A'mun desert operated by another rebel Virindi, Aerbax (who much later is revealed to be the "Overseer" that altered and trained Candeth Martine).
  • In a human raid on Aerbax's lab, the Virindi's assistant is killed, but its master is nowhere to be found.  Information found in the laboratory reveal that it was Aerbax that created the Dolls and Marionettes, and that he was at least partially responsible for the alterations of other creatures in service to the Virindi.

Solclaim, PY 12 ("The Changing of the Ways")

  • For reasons unknown, Martine aids in the founding of Danby's Outpost in the north Direlands.

Seedsow, PY 12 ("Chains of Command")

  • Black Claw Raiders, altered Drudges, are discovered in the mountains of northern and southern Osteth.  Their purpose is to apparently gather more human test subjects for their Virindi masters.
  • The leaders of each band of Raiders drop half of an object, which combined turns out to be a "Quiddity Orb".
  • A Virindi staging complex is discovered on the landbridge into the southern Direlands.  Inside is a Virindi Majordomo, who when given the Quiddity Orb, allows the bearer passage further into the complex.  Further down, the staging complex leader is found and slain.  On his remains is note revealing that the prisoners taken from Ayan Baqur months before have been taken to the Inculcation Cells, in the Obsidian Plains, for further experimentation.
  • The Cells are breeched, and Lacandrillar, the Virindi in charge of the facility, is destroyed.  All prisoners are returned to Ayan Baqur, apparently none the worse for wear.

Leafdawning, PY 12 ("Lost in the New Horizon")

  • A new edict is passed by the Directive:  Humans were responsible for the corruption of the renegade Directors, and therefore must be destroyed.  Furthermore, any Virindi deemed to have too much contact with humans is to be terminated; for some reason, the Virindi dwelling in Ayan Baqur, Claude and Leopold, are made exempt from this edict.  In order to carry out this objective, Inquisitors, the Virindi elite, are set loose.  Virindi raids, with various Virindi and their servant creatures appearing out of thin air to attack unwitting travelers, also commence.
  • Rifts, apparent sentient fragments of portal energy, are discovered.  Their defeat allows passage into the "Stable Rift" facility near Rithwic.  Inside Dirrich the Warden, a Virindi whose loyalty teeters between the Directive and the rebels, is defeated, escalating aggression by the rebels against humans.
  • The Singularity Bore, the point in which Virindi enter Auberean, is located in the center of the Obsidian Plains.  Deep inside, the Guardian of the Singularity is defeated, opening the way to the Singularity Caul; this island was once controlled by Bael'Zharon's Shadows (and was the place where the "Dark Masters" were tested), but is now the base of the "New Directive" rebels.  Even more powerful Virindi creatures, including Augmented Tumeroks and Hollow Minions, are found there.
  • A meeting between Lythusser the Diplomat and the Epoch of Unity (from the rebels and the Directive, respectively) is broken up by an attack from humans.  The purpose of the meeting is unknown, but both envoys are killed in the battle.
  • Althoucault, a Virindi calling itself "Speaker of the New Singularity", is slain near the town of Wai Jhou, further exacerbating the hostilities with the Virindi.

Verdantine, PY 12 ("Crests of a Turbulent Sea")

  • The Virindi raids continue.  In addition, floating towers operated by Controller Dolls begin to move in on the capital cities of Cragstone, Hebian-to, and Zaikhal.
  • Tribes of Tumeroks, equipped with Virindi-made weapons, begin to make raids into Osteth as well.

Thistledown, PY 12 ("Keep Your Enemies Closer")

  • The Controller Dolls within the floating towers are defeated, and the towers pull back somewhat.
  • The Virindi almost completely take over the Obsidian Plains.  Their tampering with portalspace also leads to the displacement of many creatures from their usual territories.  Many form groups under the command of very powerful leaders for protection.
  • Simulacra, Virindi inhabiting hollowed out human husks as disguise, are let loose upon the land.

Harvestgain, PY 12 ("The Widening Gyre")

  • Martine begins to erect portal to the previously undiscovered island of Marae Lassel, in the hopes of setting the humans loose on the last true Virindi stronghold.
  • Ecorto, a Director disenchanted with the New Directive's efforts to destroy humans, is influenced by Martine into moving against his former compatriots.  He provides adventurers with a chisel with which to obtain the materials the "New Singularity" is being constructed from.  After obtaining pyreal, obsidian, and chorizite from the three storage facilities, those adventurers return the components to Ecorto, who uses them to open a portal to the Seat of the New Singularity.
  • Levistras, who had severed his connection with the home Singularity, is slain, and the New Directive falls into ruin.  The rebellion over, some members still remain, and continue their attempts to form a new Singularity on Auberean.
