Gamespot has a Q&A up with Scott Brown, lead developer of Auto Assault.

GameSpy: Please tell us the backstory of the game. I understand it isn't your typical post-apocalyptic scenario.

Scott Brown: Earth has suffered an alien attack, and in battling with the alien infestation, humanity unleashed a massive nuclear strike to eradicate it. In the chaos that follows the battle still rages -- remnants of humanity fight with a group of mechanized humans and mutants created by the alien attempts to terraform Earth (make it just like the gooey swamp back home). In this post-apocalyptic landscape scarred by the battles of the past century, the remaining races fight both for their own continued survival, and the ability to make Earth into the place they envision.
