The difficulties of converting a well-known pen and paper system to an MMO aren't limited to combat alone. Sometimes spells, such as Bear's Endurance, can prove a challenge, too. Thomas Oakenstaff discusses:
Thogg and his friend end up fighting a nasty giant, and Thogg wins the fight with only 1 HP left.
...
Now, Rest heals 1 HP per level by default, for a total of 10, but that takes 8 hours. 7 minutes from now, Thogg's buff is going to wear off, taking away 20 HP. Thogg is going to die, and there's nothing for it.That's Pen and Paper D&D. Let's imagine you're playing D&D Online...
Same fight, same outcome... except Thogg clicks the "Rest" button and immediately dies.
You can read the entire post here. Xundau discusses a possible solution in the same thread, here. This may be a fine example of how DDO could break the mold. How often do you die as the result of a buff in an MMO? It will certainly be interesting to see how it turns out.
