Dungeons And Dragons Online: DDO News: Randomization/Dungeon Creation

| 27 Apr 2005 04:40

In the same thread as the previous news post, but deserving of a seperate topic, Xundau also discusses why they're going with handmade dungeons over random dungeon generators:

Randomization has its good and bad points. Ideally, it makes adventures less predictable and more spoiler-proof. If a generator is built to take character stats into account, it can even (theoretically at least) tailor content for each individual character.

However, our general opinion is that randomly-generated content in MMOs leads to endless dungeons that, while superficially unique, all pretty much play the same. As I've stated before, our team feels that the technology needed for the random generation of good, compelling content doesn't exist yet.

I can't wait to see what Turbine is going to hit us with in their dungeons. Jump into the discussion by reading Xundau's post on the official forums here.
