Asherons Call: Death in MMORPG's

| 25 Mar 2003 15:58

An all too common occurance, at least for me, in Asheron's Call is death. Well, MondesPersistants.com (that's French for Persistant Worlds for all you Anglophones out there...) has a round-table discussion with several developers on life, and more importantly, death in MMOPRG's.

Is death a big deal in a MMORPG, why / why not?

Calistas : Well I don't think it is a big deal in a game.. and I don't think it should be either. It's another way of punishing someone for making a mistake or not managing risk. It's just the easiest way of doing it :)

KFR : OK. Absolutely - it's a huge deal. Or at least it should be. The community thrives on diversity and needs patterns upon which to built respect and involvement. Since MMORPG's are mostly about character persistence, people who die less gain respect. People who don't die at all gain respect. People who die a lot may even get respect. So in a nutshell, death helps people relate to each other.

So, head on over to Modes Persistants and give it a read, it's quite interesting (and yes, it is in English.)
