Asherons Call: Some News About the Server Move

| 7 Apr 2003 17:22

Hey all! We're back and faster than ever! Have you noticed? I wanted to give you a little info on what exactly happened last week, what we've got left to do and how it affects you.

Our network is served by multiple servers that were in need of maintenance and upgrades and the like. And well, we all HATED our bandwidth cap - especially on patch days. So, we started shopping for a new ISP. In the meantime, something none of you noticed is that several of our servers were sent to the home of Trujkin - uber-code-primate for a rebuild.

Once done, we sent those off to the new ISP to pick up our web and content services while we shipped the forums servers. Monday came, we were up and running fine! Then, well, errors happened. We took the entire network down, the uberprimate got to work and we were up and running again by that evening. (Did I mention how cool he is!) In the meantime, the rest of our servers began their flight to their new home.

They arrived a day later than expected, but on Thursday we began the task up upgrading them before we brought them online. This is why you saw spotty service on Thursday. By Thursday night, we were back. And FAST. All brought to you by ONE person, our uber-code-primate, Trujkin.

Now, we've installed some new software, some new hardware, upgraded a few things and well not everything is really sure where its connected anymore, so if you find errors, report them to us immediately. But, I think you'll agree that the end result is pretty wonderful. We're MUCH faster than we used to be.

Now, the "how does it affect me?" part. In the move, we lost 2 pieces of data. (which when you consider how much data is on the ENTIRE network is amazing). The first was all of WCoD's columns from 2/10 - 4/1. Some of this will be recoverable, but I'll be posting a list of Soapboxes we lost and hoping the authors kept copies. (I didn't and have learned my lesson).

The second thing we lost was our poll data. Yeah, the one I annoyed everyone with the entire month of March. But, this wonderful speed you're enjoying is due to having data like that. So, in the coming weeks expect to see the poll back. And EVERYONE fill it out this time so I can take it down sooner :)

Anyways, I wanted to thank you for your patience during this move and to send MAJOR kudos to Trujkin for a job EXTREMELY well done. We're lucky to have him and thankful to have you, our readers.
