Basic Tips for Resume Submission to Blizzard

Every good application needs a cover letter and resume. For Artist-type positions, you will need a solid Demo Reel or Portfolio in addition to the Resume and cover letter to be seriously considered. Here are a few tips that we recommend you use to help your chances on being considered for a position at Blizzard Entertainment.

The Cover letter: A cover letter explains in more detail why you want a job, why you like this particular company and it gives the employer some better insight on your desire, your writing skills and your personality. Remember, this is your opportunity to stand apart from the hundreds of other people who are applying for the same position. A good cover letter should be only page, with 3 full paragraphs of information related to why you want this job and why you are most qualified. Remember to also personalize your cover letter to the best of your ability. A letter that seems very general will only give the impression that you are mass mailing your resume out for any job available. HINT: Make sure you proof read and spell check your cover letter.

The Resume: A resume is an organized list of assets that you possess, nothing more. 8 pages of fluff will only frustrate an employer who is trying to find key information. Like your cover letter, you should tailor your resume to the position you are applying for. If the job requires any special information such as a salary history please give them detailed and correct figures versus writing "negotiable". A resume is a blue print of your professional history and skills so make sure it is honest, correct and up to date.

A good resume will be no larger than 2 pages, and possess:

A. Contact information (All phone numbers, email and regular address)
B. Objective (What exact position you are going for. What your goal with job is)
C. Work Experience (Date of hires, job title and description)
D. Skills (C++ and Java, 3D Studio Max, Networking, Excel etc.)
E. Education (Degrees, additional schooling or certificates)
F. Other Relevant skills (related skills, personal notes)

For Programmers: Programmers are expected to only have a good resume and cover letter, but if they wish to include a sample of their code that would be a definite plus. Make sure your code sample is written in C and C++.
For Artists: Artists are REQUIRED to send a portfolio with your resume and cover letter. Texture Artists and Illustrators can send a physical folder as their portfolio, where Modelers and Animators need to have a demo reel that needs to be on a VHS tape. (NO CDs!!) Your Demo reel should be no longer than 5 minutes, and make sure you include your best and newest work at the beginning. Remember that your Demo Reel will not be returned to you.

For Level Designers: Level Designers should include a CD that has files of 3D levels and Maps that can be copy and pasted into a specific game. Make sure you label the files in the folders that say what game they are from. You should also make a BUNCH of jpegs that are screenshots of your levels and maps.

For Sound Designers and Composers: Sound Designers should include a CD that has several tracks that include Fantasy and Sci-Fi sound effects. Composers should have several tracks that include original scores that would be great for the Fantasy and Sci-Fi based games.

For Business Related Positions: For positions such as Business Development, Public Relations and Marketing, a resume and cover letter is the only thing that is required. However, any articles or business plans you have written would be highly encouraged.

Please remember that we CANNOT RETURN ANY MATERIALS SUBMITTED. This is very important. Do not send originals, send copies. Do not send anything that you are not comfortable with never seeing again.
