Maybe this will help. This is a summary of what we know of Martine's adventrues so far, intersected with relevant points from the Virindi storyline
(Martine's story commences about 2 months before BZ is released)
The person we know as Candeth Martine was originally an Isparian, like all of us. On Ispar he was married to Melanay and had a daughter named Aritta, in short he had a family he was very fond of and he remembered them constantly during the first few months he arrived here on Dereth
For Martine was a true explorer at heart (on Ispar he might have worked as a merchant/diplomat, always traveling) and so when he started dreaming of this world, as was common to those that would later stumble upon portals to Dereth, he couldnt resist the call, abandoning his beloved family-
Once he was settled in this new land, he quickly hooked up with a newly formed group of hardy adventurers that called themselves "The Explorer Society" under the direction of Sir Alayne, probably a minor noble from the Aluvian lands on Ispar. And so Martine started to perform missions for this society, carrying out studies of various creatures and places in Dereth. And on of these studies would put him on the path of his destiny, a seemingly trivial investigation of a Mosswart/Banderling clan skirmish...
The reasoning behind Martine setting out to watch the Mossie and Bander feud was not because of his personal choosing, but rather because of an order from his superior in the Explorer Society, Sir Alayne. But it was all a trap, for Alayne had made a secret deal with the Virindi, in exchange for a human captive that they could experiment on, the Virindi would open up the portal to Chakron Flux, fron where we retreived a fragment of the singularity that ultimately allowed us to defeat BZ
The irony in this action was that the Virindi had already decided to open up the portal to help us get rid of BZ, which they called the Dark Walker, before Alayne contacted them. In essence, they were getting Martine for free
It is important to note that the faction of Virindi that Alayne dealed with was the faction lead by Levistras, the rebel director. The loss of this fragment of the singularity from Chakron Flux is what set the loyalist Virindi (those still not tainted with this world's chaos, like Levistras's faction) against us, with Levistras's faction basically not caring what happened to us.
Now, we return to Martine. Once he was in the hands of the Virindi, he was transferred to the Mossie Hideout in Vesayen Islands where the Virindi tortured him and finally broke his spirit, allowing them to insert directly into his brain the mind/essence of another Virindi. Someone we only know as "Virindi Overseer" headed this experiment.
Meanwhile, the Mosswart tribe that delivered Martine decided to break a deal they had with the Virindi. Aarg Marg, who was still chief at that time, transfered his tribe over to the Moss chamber near Zaikhal from their former hideout at Vesayen. The Virindi found this unacceptable and decided to test their new creation (Martine), sending him out to assasinate the rebel Mosswart chief.
It is important to point out that during Martine's breaking and later training, the Overseer had no contact with him, he was rtained by his inferiors. His only contact with him was during this point where Martine was sent out to kill the Mosswart. He told him he was his creation, and that he was going to deactivate "certain blocks he had in his memory and brain". This is what ultimately gave Martine his inhuman (and inVirindi) powers. More on this later. He also said he was "loosening his leash", giving Marinte more free will
Martine then proceeded to kill the Mossie chief (which was later preplaced by the current Graaghk). From here, he went out of control. His new inhuman powers allowed him to take his revenge on the Virindi that had done him so much harm, EXCEPT his overseer, which he could not find. He completed his vengeance by killing sir Alayne, the man that had betrayed him to the Virindi.
And in between these killings, came his only failing. He also decided to take out Asheron, feeling he had caused all this by first bringing him here to Dereth, and then not saving him from the Virindi. But when he found Asheron and confronted him, he was sorely defeated. Martine still carries his hate to Asheron, as we'll later see
Feeling his thirst for revenge momentarily quenched, Martine started to come up with a plot that would allow him to become the supreme power on this island. However, his motivations during this period are still unclear to the most learned of our sages. He contacted his friend Ketnan and others, giving out books that told of his misadventrures up to this point, books that eventually reached our hands.
It was during this point, that the Virindi Executors appeared in Dereth. Sent by the Directive to eliminate the rebel faction of Virindi, they proceeded with this task with great haste, picketing the town of Ayan Baqur that was about to fall briefly to the hands of the rebels.
Alerted by his Virindi half's rantings and quasi gibberish to this fact, Martine saw this as a mean to further his own plans. He approached their HQ in Dereth with the intent to hold negotiations with him. However, the Executors and other loyalist Virindi turned on him. Martine barely escaped to his lair alive.
There, he found Asheron waiting for him. Martine collapsed from his wounds from the Executor fight, and although Asheron knew he hated him, he set out to cure Martine, trying to bring him to his senses. He had originally hoped that Martine would provide him with certain information (about what, we still dont know), but left that errand unfinished once he made sure Martine was fully healed.
Many months passed while Martine was incapacitated. The rebel Virindi made their bid for power and lost because of our intervention in their plans. The loyalist faction, the apparent winner, retreated to Marae Lassel and their fortresses in the OP to recover from their losses.
Seeing his plans foiled because of the things that had passed while he was wounded, Martine opened up portals to Marae Lassel, giving us access to the only place where his former tormentors were safe from us.
From here on, the Virindi inside Martine slowly started to come to his senses, and has begun to drive martine slowly insane, in an apparent bid to take over control of his body. Still with a deep hatred for Asheron, Martine has sent out to strike at him through his protegees, High Queen Strathelar and her son, Borelean. Why? Because Asheron is no longer within his reach. He has entered portal space and left Dereth, for reasons unknown
(Source of this last phrase: "the Eyes of a Child" story at the zone: "There will come a time where you (Strathelar) will need me the most and I will be unable to help you".
From Martine's latest journal in Martinate holding: "I can no longer sense Asheron Realaidain on this world").
And so, while Martine's internal Virindi slowly drags him down the path of insanity, he has set in motion a plan to infiltrate Strathelar's royal guard with Simulacras created by him, in hopes of finding and assasinating both her and her son.
But someone new has entered the scene during this story. Someone that counts with Martine's backing, an ally that has his own agenda and even darker motives. Someone from a distant past...
