The Rocky Mountain News was all about Auto Assault this week, with Brian Crecente writing 3 whole articles about our passion for road rage. First off is the review. Here's an excerpt:
I know to do well in an MMO - a game that never sleeps, that moves on without you if you don't obsessively play it - I will have to give up large, typically family-filled chunks of my days. And I know that for a while, that's exactly what I will do.
While the version I played of Auto Assault, an apocalyptic car wars MMO, may not have hit on all of its cylinders, it wasn't that far off.
The second piece is more of a descriptive package about the game:
MUTANT
History: The mutants believe they are the next natural evolutionary step in humanity, which happened to be brought on by radiation and contamination.
Home base: The Citadel
Classes: Champion, shaman, archon, avenger.
Super power: Mutants can manipulate the planet's contamination, calling up apparitions to attack enemies.
Abilities: Contaminated vehicles can regenerate, and mutants can use the flora and fauna to their advantage.
The last article is more of an in-depth look at the development process, called "A Perpetual Work in Progress":
While most development teams move on to the next project after shipping a game, Auto Assault is a massively multiplayer game that charges a monthly subscription and thrives on fresh content.
So three days after delivering the final product to publisher NCSoft, the Louisville-based team that spent 240,000 hours crafting Auto Assault got back to work.
While part of the nearly 50-person team keeps a watchful eye on the game, which went live this week, the rest of the group will work to improve it, creating new missions, storylines and features that can be downloaded later.
