It was at the point in our history on Dereth where Elysa had officially declared that the land we occupied was our home. One of the many problems that plagued us, however, was that Candeth Martine, twisted by the Vrindi (that's another story altogether) was being manipulated by an Empyrean named Gaerlan. Seeking revenge against Asheron for the death of his brother, he tricked Martine into doing some incredibly powerful things...and not to our benefit.
He broke the menhir rings around the four essences. By doing so, he unleashed various aspects of those essences across the lands. Ranging from small nuisances to dangerous foes, the elements drove the normal residents of Dereth far and away. It was said a traveller could not go from Holtburg to Cragstone without constantly battling the elements - literally.
In the end, however, Martine redeemed himself. He led the Isparians to the various cores, the sources of Gaerlan's power, and the primary source for the elements. He shared with us the secret to defeating the elements - each one has it`s opposite. Fire and Frost, Lightning and Acid. Using a weapon of the opposite element against an aspect would cause more damage than just using a plain weapon. The heroes defeated the guardian crystals, and the elements were pushed back - for a time.
But Gaerlan was not done. He summoned four mighty avatars of the elements:
"In the dawning of the world, they lived as one. In the dawning of the world, without the sun. Sundered wide apart to feed the world their blood. Now return as one. Wind, Storm, Flame, and Decay together, a complete being. Perfect in everyway. Mine to command! You are my servant arise, arise!"
He had created the Harbinger (or something resembling one). Again, Isparians were up for the task, and defeated the creature. Martine faced and defeated Gaerlan, at the cost of his life, and the world...did not return to normal. Various aspects of the elements still roam the countryside, although far fewer in number. Members of the Arcanum are still cataloging the various statistics of these elementals, so should you come across an undocumented one in your travels, you should submit the information to be recorded for posterity.
