In one of the threads regarding the lack of an included DM client on NWN 2's release, Adam Miller had this to say:
The folks at Obsidian are very busy. I think they've been overly ambitious about certain things (e.g. the toolset), and have been forced to prioritize. I think you'll see things like the graphics engine, animation, and the official campaign getting a lot of attention over the next few months. That's what sells those initial boxes and can determine the fate of the game.
If all goes well, Atari will decide that an expansion is worthwhile, in which case money will be spent and we'll probably see lots of high quality patches and enhancements. Who knows, maybe we'll see mounts and other features that people thought lost forever.
On the other hand, we may see NWN2 released, poor sales, and Obsidian forced to limit what they can patch. Any patch we see will likely be unofficial, developers working after hours out of the goodness of their hearts. Even then, they may have their hands tied due to licensing reasons, unable to patch a game that they've poured their years into.
To some degree, we can determine the fate of NWN2. I've been spending hundreds of hours planning for a campaign for NWN2. Hopefully my work will bring extra value and fun to a game, encouraging further sales bringing attention to the game. I think I've been written up in three or four game magazines, each time bringing interest to the game from more casual players. Everybody likes free stuff.
Perhaps instead of focusing on the problems inherent with every game release, we can consider what we as individuals can do to help. Make the next Counterstrike for NWN2. Plan an adventure for your friends. An artist is not limited by their canvas, but instead rises to the challenge.
All would do well to listen to and heed the words of respected community members such as Mr. Miller. It won't solve any of this by dancing around the bonfires chanting "NO CLIENT, NO PURCHASE!"
