The first crystal discovered by Isparians was a large, rotating crystal the Gelidites called The Great Work. Under the enchantments of the Gelidites, the Great Work sucked the heat from the earth, causing the snows that carpeted Dereth. When the explorers rushed to destroy it, the crystal defended itself with powerful magics. Many were slain, but in the end the Isparians prevailed.
However, pieces of the Great Work started replicating across the countryside. Explorers will find everything from Broken Fragments to Fragments that display a certain sentience.
Pieces of those fragments can also be turned into weapons, shields, armor...the crafters of Dereth are incredibly creative!
In addition, the ancient Empyreans had used these crystals to imprison the Hopeslayer. The Great Work was one of several crystals, acting as part of his prison. Four others were the Nexus Fragment, the Fenmalain, Caulnalain and Shendolain crystals. The final crystal, the Shard of the Herald, was discoverd months later, on the lost archipelago was destroyed in an epic battle, still talked about today.
It does give one cause to pause and wonder - should we rush into each dungeon and unlock it's secrets? Are we condemmed to repeat the past?
