RPG Vault has just posted an interview of game Lead Designer Hyung Jin Kim and Producer James Bae, where they delve deeper into the backstory, and discuss the changes in gameplay.
Hyung Jin Kim & James Bae: While making Lineage II, one area that we changed deliberately from the previous work is the area of character development. In the previous work, instead of allowing a player to customize one's own character directly, the game only allowed a player to equip a character with additional items to increase the number and variety of available activities.
Compared with Lineage, the importance of items has been reduced in Lineage II. Instead, as a character's level goes up, each character is allowed to acquire more skills and to choose from more diverse classes. By doing so, players can steadily grow their characters little by little over time in proportion to the amount of time they invest in the game.
