Shortly after the destruction of the Great Work of Frore, fragments of crystal began to appear in Dereth. Furthermore, the shadows, which previously had been lurking only in small numbers beneath the surface, now moved openly and boldly across the land. Slayers of these malignant entities found that they sometimes were able to recover crystalline or shadowy residue. Aliester the Loquacious researched these components, eventually distilling his research into the Treatise on the Properties of Fused Gems. The culmination of this research was the discovery that when both the crystalline residue and dark matter were combined and melded together, this material could be fashioned into very a strong "Shadowhunter Armour" by those with the necessary skills.
The rest, as they say, is history. The Shadows did not take too kindly to their own substance being used in the war against them, and sent Hamud ibn Rafik to slay the three Master Smiths who possessed the knowledge to construct these unique sets of armour. Repeatedly.
For months afterwards, Isparians lamented the loss of vitae the three Smiths had suffered - or more specifically, the loss of skill a vitae penalty entails. The Smiths were no longer able to produce armour of the same calibre as their previous work - but as a partial redemption, the less powerful Shadow Armour could be imbued with the Major Atlan Stones, increasing its protection at the expense of leaving its wearer vulnerable to a specific element. More recently, however, the Gharun'dim mage Nuhmudira began taking steps that would eventually place her firmly into the spotlight of current affairs. One of her actions during her rise to notoriety was her success at healing the three Smiths' vitae, allowing them once more to produce a product akin to the original Shadowhunter Armour.
The story does not end here, however - recently, crystalline entities of even greater power have been sighted in Dereth. More importantly, shards of crystal taken from these entities have been known to increase the power of some forms of Shadowhunter Armour! Given these recent developments, Aesa has re-researched and completely updated our Shadowhunter Armor writeup! There's never been a better time to clear your packs of all those bits of sharp crystal and icky bits of shadow...
