Something like this surprises me, even though it shouldn't. A game called Ethnic Cleansing is just one of many games where players are charged to shoot minorities in an effort to spread white supremacist tidings through the nation. National Alliance, the developers of Ethnic cleansing, say, "The whole intent of making this video game was to make a racially provocative video game and if it does help promote the separation of the races, then it's been positive and that's what we want."
While games like ethnic cleansing are disgusting, they're pretty prevalent. The object of a game called Border Patrol is to shoot Mexican immigrants as they try to cross the US border.
As disgusting as actions like this are, some research has yielded that hate speech is protected by the first amendment, and I'm willing to be That Guy and suggest it probably should be - offensive speech is still expression. Additionally, if we're all of the mind that violent games don't instill violent behavior, we shouldn't rush to regulate these games, either.
Then again, I wonder if beating the hell out of the developers is a hate crime.
