Why Are There No Fat, Black Avatars?
|
80% of all game programmers are white, a fact that reveals itself in most popular games, or so says CNN. The fact minorities play games longer than whites has done little to create a push for non-stereotypical avatars. Mario Armstrong of NPR seems to think that trend may begin to die out as gaming grows and attracts minority designers to the business, which would help eliminate the view of black and Hispanics as thugs.
However, I'm still hung up on the lack of fat heroes in gaming. Outside of Mario, a stereotypical fat Italian, I can't think of any avatars with a BMI over 25. Not that unnecessary flub is fun to look at, but not being able to parade around as a girthy man in games is just as discriminatory.
