Playing A CD On Your Computer Is Not A Right

| 23 Sep 2005 15:23

imageRemember back when you could just buy a CD and then it was yours and you could do whatever you want with it? Well, I think we can thank the money of the RIAA and the cluelessness of Congress for the end of those halcyon days. Anyway, a music industry exec was quoted as saying "we need to understand that listening to music on your computer is an extra privilege." Though the quote was quickly pulled (some cowardly type in the home office freaking out, obviously), ARS Technica has screenshots. You know, because if they make playing a CD incredibly difficult, we'll all be inclined to buy a whole lot more music. Not only is this insight into an industry that hopes we'll go back to buying CDs, it's also a revealing look into the future of DRM, which is only going to get more and more oppressive. Just cause you buy stuff doesn't mean it's yours, kids.
