Some people might not remember this, but World of Warcraft's rest system was supposed to be much harsher than it currently is. The initial plan was that playing past a certain point meant you'd stop earning experience and you'd have to go rest in an inn. I thought it was pretty cool, but those people (properly referred to as "those people") who spend 16 hours a day parked in front of an MMORPG complained that they should be able to smack pixels to change database entries AS MUCH AS THEY WANTED. So, Blizzard settled for the system they have now.
China, which sees game addiction as a problem, and despite e-petitions (as effective as ever, which is to say "not effective at all"), is borrowing this system. Game developers are using a fatigue system in lieu of simply pulling the plug. It'll never work here without similar government intervention, but it's still interesting to see.
