In one of those things that proves my points in ancillary ways, the BBC spoke with Robbie Cooper, a photo journalist who followed Chinese money farmers and power levelers for his latest exhibit. He describes them as independent entrepreneurs, not as the yellow horde of immersion-destructing sweatshop denizens members of the gaming community like to label them. Check this out:
"A commodity is a commodity. If it is worth something, people are going to work hard to make the money. In China, there is matter of fact attitude about it," he says.
...
"A lot of people I met did not have as much sentiment about the games as they do in the West. In China you do what you have to do to get by," he explains.
"You do what you have to do to get by." Sounds a lot like the American Dream, to me. Words to heed the next time you harass a guy trying to sell his umpteenth purple item in general chat.
