Mad Genius Miyamoto Interviewed; Games Industry: "Games Should Be Fun And Appeal To Everyone? What's THAT about?"

imageAn interesting interview, from BusinessWeek of all places, gets inside the head of mad genius-Nintendo guru Shigeru Miyamoto. Miyamoto shares some insight into the birth of Mario and makes some ground-shaking (by game industry standards) statements, like "software makers want games to be so realistic, but first and foremost games should evoke emotions" and "Women in their 20s haven't been a major target for game makers. But many young women have found our games fun, especially Nintendogs." This is particularly refreshing in light of industry gurus leaning on evolution to say "lol girls don't play games lol." What's sad about this interview is every designer *should* think like this and so many of them don't. In a perfect world, Miyamoto would be just one of a legion of good designers, not standing above so many hacks going "What do we need to make our game better? I know! MORE PIXELS! MORE TERAFLOPS! MORE SHINY!"
