We brought you the inital story yesterday, but today we have a little bit of followup. That rootkit program Sony is using on its copyrighted CDs? Well, there's no uninstall option and, if you happen to find the files and delete them, it disables your CD-ROM drive. Moreover, the "copyright protection" drivers load themselves into Safe Mode. This is a whole new paradigm in computing that demands a new word: parasite. It burrows into your system and sets up shop and taking it out may just kill you. It's like something out of a SciFi movie. They're also providing a perfect avenue for infiltrating your computer, since it's easy enough for virus and worm writers to use the Sony rootkit to hook in their own malicious code. But I'm sure we'll all feel so much better knowing Sony's copyright is protected!
