Most of the sources point to this article in the Red Herring, a name which seems oddly fitting for this. Why? Well, it turns out Pacific Epoch has uncovered the truth: "Xinhua got half of the story, and misreported the rest" - the game in question was Warcraft III, not World of Warcraft. I think I hear someone saying "oops" over this.
