Analysts Claim PS3 Will Have 44% Market Share by 2011

This tidbit of gaming news comes from the fine people at Joystiq. Apparently, Boston-based research group "The Yankee Group" has predicted that by 2011, the PS3 will be leading the new round of Console Wars with a 44% market share, Microsoft's Xbox360 right behind with a 40% share, and Nintendo's offering with a "Wii" 16% of the market. They also believe that overall, console ownership will drop from the current generation due to rising costs.

Now, 2011 is five whole years away--perhaps, by that time, the novelty of the Wiimote will have worn off, Blu-Ray will become affordable and the standard of High Definition discs over HDDVD... so, those Damn Yankees might well end up being correct. Five years is an awfully long time, though--especially in an industry as fluctuating as this one.

You can read the actual press release here, while Joystiq's commentary can be found here.
