It's no secret that a key battlefield in this latest generation of the Console Wars will be the Internet. While Microsoft's Xbox Live service is clearly at the head of the pack in terms of gaming, both Sony and Nintendo have plans to bring a more cohesive and complete Internet experience to users of their respective consoles. The Wii has been announced to support the Opera web browser, though details about price et al have been sketchy at best.

Well, they're sketchy no longer! From an official Opera press release:

Opera Software today announced details on its browser for Nintendo's soon-to-be released game console, Wii. Opera's full Web browser is available for download from the "Wii Shop Channel". Nintendo has stated that they will offer Opera free of charge as a temporary promotion for all Wii users until June 2007.
Wii

From July 2007, users can purchase the Opera browser using Wii points. Wii points are credits users can buy that allow them to add new games or the Opera browser to their Wii consoles. The number of Wii points required to purchase Opera has not yet been announced.

So, if you're one of the first to pick up those million Wii units available for the US launch, you get a free browser. Nifty.

Mii want.
