The Escapist Newsroom reports on what I'm sure many of you already know: Yesterday, Gamestop/EB Games started taking preorders for Sony's PS599. To prevent the sort of fiascos encountered in the Xbox 360 launch, they refused to take any more pre-orders than the number of PS3s they knew they'd be getting.
Of course, since that ranged from anywhere between 3 to 20 units, it didn't take long for all of those preorders to get snapped up by hungry consumers. (You can read Joystiq's coverage of one early-morning preorder event, if you're interested) Kotaku reports that Gamestop is indeed confirming that every single one of their preorder units has been accounted for.
Remember that Sony's projected amount of PS3s to ship initially is a mere 400,000. It's no surprise, then, that there were rumors that up to 80% of launch-day PS3s had been sold in one blindingly fast Tuesday morning. Thankfully, PS3Fanboy had the time (and the solar-powered calculator) to do some number-crunching, and concluded that--sorry, Chicken Little!--the sky was, indeed, not falling.
Those of you who want to get their mitts on the PS3 but missed out on the pre-order rush can, then, still have hope that you can camp out at Best Buy or Wal-Mart for the big black box-ish thing.
I've heard rumors of PWiiorders starting later this week, but nothing's been confirmed by anybody yet. Still, I'm getting out my hat and gloves and jacket just in case I feel the need to go wait in a 6 AM line...
