Neverwinter Nights 2: Official Campaign Review at NW Vault

| 25 Jan 2007 02:00

NW Vault has posted the third in a series of reviews covering different aspects of the game. This time, Vault reviewer Dormammu takes up the gauntlet and reviews the original campaign. He scores it at 7.64/10.00 and says:

I am very satisfied with the money I spent on NWN2, and the time I spent playing the Official Campaign. There were often times when I said to myself, "This is what I was hoping NWN would be like the first time around." They have the best selection of companions as a whole for any of the official campaigns (still, no one as good as Minsc), NWN or otherwise. I liked Khelgar, Neeshka, and Sand the best. They are fun characters, and actually useful! I would have felt very empty without their companionship.

Despite being the resource hog it is, the game offered a very solid and compelling set of visuals and sounds. I must admit, though, I was a little put off that they recycled some of the music from NWN. Now, if they had recycled some music from Baldur's Gate...I might think a little differently.

Is it unfair to hold the Official Campaign to such a high standard? Will anything that comes out in the next 20 years ever be as good as the old originals? I say yes, to the first, and maybe to the second. It is fair to hold the official campaign to such a high standard simply because of it's obvious nods to it's predecessors. I wouldn't mention names of games if their influence (and honourable tributes) were not obvious.

Will anything ever be as good as the "classics"? NWN and NWN2 have given the NWN online community wonderful tools to help us achieve many great things in computer roleplaying. I feel that the NWN2 official campaign could help inspire what is needed to get the best out of the community yet.
