Gamasutra has a fun little feature up where a series of experts discuss the console wars and try to predict how they'll go. Keep in mind, as I once learned in intro to psychology, statistically speaking, experts have a lower chance of being right than a random sample. They over think it! Nonetheless, the general idea from the article is that the Wii will be fastest out of the gate, the 360 will overtake them in a couple years and then the PS3 will win once Blu-ray crushes its enemies. Nothing like going out on a limb and saying all three will win!
In summary, I think that this cycle will be misleading from start to finish: Nintendo will look like the winner for a while, then they will lose a bit of steam. Microsoft will chug along doing a great job, and Sony will lag badly. My guess is that during early 2009, people will be calling Microsoft the winner. Later that year, sentiment will probably shift again, and people will start calling Sony the winner.
The full thing is over at Gamasutra.
