Slashdot Asks: Has the Wii Lost It's Magic?

| 19 Feb 2007 17:42

Slashdot Games has an interesting summary of two articles that look at the Nintendo Wii and what has gone on since it's insanely hyped first few weeks to now. They're touching on a point that I have discovered myself recently, the magic may indeed be gone.

When the Wii first launched, like everyone else, the first thing I asked in any electronics store was: got any Wiis? The answer was always no and now, several months later, I don't even look anymore. If I stumbled upon one, I might buy it, but likely just for a friend and only since they're so rare. For me, the shortage has killed my urge to have one. The 360 is just fine for me. And that doesn't even touch on the PS3, I saw three of them in Wal-Mart last week and didn't even contemplate buying one.

What is most interesting to me though is how those friends I have who have Wiis are quickly losing interest. At first, it was an amazing thing, but slowly even they care much less. There is a novelty, but I wonder if it is not wearing off. The hyped launch and Wii Sports have disguised something that these articles touch on: a short launch line-up. The Wii's is not that far a head of the PS3s and nowhere near what the 360 can offer. With a few notable exceptions, there really are not that many options for Wii players. The staple - Wii Sports - can only hold their attention so long.
