Will Wright, the celebrated designer who brought The Sims, SimCity and soon Spore to the world, gave a presentation recently caught by the guys at CNet News.com. In this presentation, he discusses digital storytelling and why it has so much potential as a medium. A good example from the article: ever feel guilty watching a movie? How about when you beat the heck out of your pet for no reason in Black and White?
"You walk away thinking about the meaning of life," he said. "How did we get here?"
He also showed how artificial societies in Spore can be quickly turned into representations of human behavior.
For example, he showed how, by dropping a monolith into a populated area, he created a religious icon. The next thing that happened was that the local creatures quickly began worshipping [sic] the monolith.
