Since the very beginnings of the Age of War, the world of Altaia had been divided into many kingdoms. Some of these kingdoms were large, holding dominion over many cities. Others were small, relying on a heavily fortified capital city from which they could impose their influence. Some kingdoms boasted massive armies, while others played the games of diplomacy in order to maintain their sovereign status. Each of these kingdoms had cultural and social systems all their own. Yet the many kingdoms of Altaia shared one universal: they were governed by monarchy. Kings most often ruled, but in cases where there was no male heir to be had, a woman could reign as Queen. Kings were encouraged to breed prolifically, and often took multiple wives to ensure there would be a suitable heir. From his offspring, a King must always select his successor. Most often this would be his eldest son, though if younger child proved a more suitable ruler they might be chosen instead.
During their youth, male children born to Altaian royal families were educated in the ways of kingship. It did not matter if a King had one son or five, each must know how to rule so that there would always be a worthy successor. Most often the successor would take on his siblings as advisors, or give them other duties worthy of their high station. To most Princes this was an acceptable substitute, but not to all. In some circumstances there was in-fighting between royal siblings, assassinations, even regicide. However, throughout the Ages there was but one instance when a royal Prince raised an army and marched upon his own castle. This is his story.
In the 334th year of the Age of Heroes, Prince Terro Vagnur was born into the royal family of the kingdom of Noria. Noria was located near the center of Altaia and shared borders with four other kingdoms. Existing in a climate so rife with war, the Norian kingdom had always to play a delicate game of diplomacy, whilst maintaining a formidable standing army as well. Prince Terro was third in line for the throne of Noria, behind his brother Gerhalt and his sister Anjea. Gerhalt was a full ten years older than Terro, and before his young brother had even reached maturity, Gerhalt had already led several successful military campaigns. Still, throughout his life, Prince Terro had always believed it would be he who was chosen to rule Noria when his father died. After all, he had something Gerhalt didn't, something Gerhalt could never have. Terro was one of the Chosen.
