WarCry's Razorwire takes a look at Fallen Earth in GDC, and he's more than impressed:
I got my first look at Fallen Earth from Icarus Studios at AGC a few months ago. It was only a brief glimpse, but it left me wanting more. Today I got my wish and was able to get a guided tour of the game from Lee Hammock, the Lead Designer.
The first thing he showed me was Character Creation which was fairly impressive with the level of detail and customization. Two of the features you can change on your character are piercings and tattoos. I love this game already. After selecting a few different combinations of options, I really saw how unique a person can become.
Talking further about character development, I learned that there are no classes and that Fallen Earth is a skill-based system. Players will be able to accrue Ability Points and then spend these AP to enhance statistics or skills. This is something that I liked in a couple of other games, and look forward to seeing how it will work in this one.
Another part of making your character come to life is the Faction System. There are many options for you to take as you choose to align yourself with one of the many factions that are all trying to impress their view of how the world should work on the others. Your faction is not set it stone, but the longer you stay with one, the harder it will be to join another, especially if it is one that is directly opposed to your current one.
Yes, there will be crafting. I didn't get to see much of it, but there will be scavenging, and looting of objects that can be used to create items. The best part? Bullets will be craftable by players. That's right, you can become a post-apocalyptic arms dealer.
Right now the game is failry early in the development stages so many of these features may get changed. Speaking of one in particular is the special abilities, or mutations. At AGC an ability was shown that has since been removed. Mutations will be more subtle, and Lee said they would be "more X-files and less Justice League".
PvP will be possible, and some of the towns will be in a constant state of changing hands. Controlling a town may give your faction access to special item shops or crafting recipes.
While still a ways out, Fallen Earth is an MMO that should be at the top of your list of games to keep an eye on. If you love post-apocalyptic single player RPG's, then you are going to appreciate Fallen Earth.
