THESE COLORS DON' RUN... interviewing a hero.
By Jackson Turner
Senior Times CorrespondentNo matter how often I am required to go to City Hall, one thing always gives me a feeling of quiet wonder, a subtle security; the sight of heroes in all of their variety coming from and returning to their various patrols and missions in order to protect those who are less able or inclined to protect themselves. As I entered Atlas Plaza last Wednesday, I was struck with the same sense of aw and my eye was attracted to one in hero in particular. A large man, clad in blue tights, wearing a red and white striped cape, fastened at his neck by a single gold star, talking with a group of young heroes. As I watched I decided to interview him. His name is Air Strike One and here is story.
JT: My name is Ja ...
AS1: I know your work, pleasure to meet you.
JT: What is your name?
AS1: Air Strike One
JT: Why are you giving gifts and money to the group of heroes?
AS1: They're young heroes. They need support; if I can offer that to them I am obligated to do so.
JT: Obligated?
AS1: Absolutely.
JT: Why?
AS1: They decided to make a difference. Ask any teacher, any officer, any parent how many obstacles they face... while trying to do the right thing. The good ones are either outnumbered or outgunned. These young heroes chose to act. They deserve the support.
JT: You've made the same decision, to protect and serve, as it were. Why do you do it?
AS1: My mother served in the military from the age of 17. She gave his life protecting this country. She had no "super powers" instead she had was an understanding that no matter what the problems were, she could help the people who needed it. She had no super group to turn to instead she had a handful of honored and honorable soldiers to depend on. She was honored to live her life in accord with one sentiment, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal...".
I put on the costume to pay respect to those with super powers that came before me. I wear theses colors to honor the country that allowed me to choose my role in the world. I fight the good fight to honor my mother. That's all there is to it.
JT: Would you like to say anything specifically to the readers of this article?
AS1: To the heroes and their loved ones I would like to say, thank you. For what you've accomplished and what you attempt to accomplish.
To those who oppose us... I say this on behalf of the heroes of Paragon, "These eyes are sharp; they will see you. These arms are long; they will reach you. This blood may flow but these colors don't run. You have been warned."
JT: Indeed they have.
